The Walk to the Well

How far can you get on Ann's #WalktotheWell? Start the challenge now.

Most of us know that millions of people have to walk hours every day to fetch clean water. But none of us know the full story.

The time wasted, or the reality of risking their lives multiple times a day. Just for a drink.

It’s time to change that.

At Just a Drop, we’re a community-led charity with a big mission -  to end this mindless waste of human potential.

But we noticed that telling people time and time again, about the lack of access to water, wasn’t going to make real change.

So how do we highlight the people it affects, and not just the problem?

This is The Walk to the Well.

The longest Twitter thread ever made.

Challenging people to scroll the distance of one woman’s 9km walk to water.

The real life story of Ann, from one of our communities in Kenya.

Across over 2000 tweets, the thread takes people on a powerful journey.

Through an incredible, immersive story.

From threatening strangers and demanding terrain, to the quieter moments where Ann dreams of her future.

When people scroll as far as they can, they simply like the tweet and are sent back the distance they reach, as well as a prompt to donate.

Raising awareness and creating real change on the ground for thousands of people.

The campaign goes live on Monday 20th March 2023, ahead of World Water Day.

We’re hoping for thousands of donations, that will help bring clean water solutions, like sand

dams, closer to communities.

You’ve been reading for around 2 minutes now.

Ann will have to walk 75 times this before she gets home with her jerrycan.

Our goal at Just a Drop is to make that journey shorter and give millions of people their future’s back.

Changing things for the better, step by step.

Start Ann’s challenge here and see how far you can get.

  • But why can't people just move closer to water?

But why can't people just move closer to water?

Just a Drop launched our the longest Twitter thread ever for World Water Day - following in the footsteps on Ann a 32-year-old Kenyan mother who is forced to walk 9km every day to collect water. But we were surprised to see that there seemed to be one common question: “But why don’t people move closer to the water?”

  • What We Do

    What We Do

We work at a grassroots level to support communities around the world with access to sustainable safe water solution, sanitation facilities and knowledge of safe hygiene practices: such as through the construction of wells, pipelines, sand dams, rainwater harvesting systems and latrines, and hygiene and sanitation programmes.

  • Why Water?

    Why Water?

With clean water, communities can begin to lift themselves out of poverty and build brighter futures. Drinking dirty water can make people sick. That’s just part of the picture. A lack of clean water and sanitation holds back development and makes it harder for communities to escape the poverty trap.

  • Our Approach

    Our Approach

We believe everyone, everywhere, should have access to clean water as a basic right. We want to see a world where everyone has clean water and adequate sanitation, and the increased health and prosperity this brings. Our approach is to support marginalised people across the world through community-led development, rather than aid; and to focus on sustainability and quality, ensuring a project's transformative impact is felt for decades to come.
