  • Our Approach
  1. About Us
  2. Our Approach

Our Approach

We believe everyone, everywhere, should have access to clean water as a basic right. We want to see a world where everyone has clean water and adequate sanitation, and the increased health and prosperity this brings.

Our approach is to support marginalised people across the world through community-led development, rather than aid; and to focus on sustainability and quality, ensuring a project's transformative impact is felt for decades to come.

We work with communities and local partners to implement water, sanitation and hygiene ('WASH') solutions that best suit a community's specific needs, and which take into account local water availability, geography, infrastructure, economic conditions and culture.

Community

Our approach is rooted in community-led development, rather than aid, as local ownership is vital to the sustainability of our projects. We work together with local partners and communities from initial proposal through to a project's completion. Each project establishes community-based structures for the maintenance and management of a solution. This approach maintains the dignity of the local community, and ensures their investment, increasing a project's longevity and securing its success.

Sustainability

Our projects and solutions are sustainable and designed and developed to last, for maximum benefit to the communities they serve. Our approach ensures community-ownership, which is key to a project's sustainability. We believe in transforming lives for the long-term, and we aim to monitor our projects for a minimum of 7 years after completion.

Quality

Our approach focuses on the quality of our projects and solutions, to ensure their transformative impact lasts for the long-term. Many of our country project officers have over 40 years engineering experience in an international context, and our UK team has significant relevant professional experience.

Impact

We ensure that all of our projects make a lasting, positive impact to the lives of the poorest communities around the world, transforming lives. We aim to monitor our projects for a minimum of 7 years after completion to ensure this. We can clearly demonstrate our impact, and report back to each project's funding partner to demonstrate the difference their support has made.

    Myths About Mensturation

When half the world’s population spends at least 10 years of their life menstruating, and on any given day there are 300 million people menstruating worldwide. It is then overwhelming to also know that for at least 500 million women and girls[1] it is a major challenge to maintain their menstrual hygiene in a private, safe, and dignified manner.

Report: Atlas Copco & Just a Drop Project Visit to Kenya

In April 2023, Just a Drop and Water for All UK & Ireland (Atlas Copco’s employee-led initiative) joined forces for a meaningful trip to the east of Kenya. The purpose of this visit was an internal audit by Atlas Copco to assess project impact and sustainability. Alex Hatt, Chair of the UK & Ireland Water for All committee, aimed to explore and understand the supported communities better. Below is her review of the visit.

What Do We Mean By ‘Menstrual Hygiene Management’?

In the lead up to Menstrual Hygiene Day (28th May), Just a Drop will be sharing impacts, stories, and information about Menstrual Hygiene around the world and in our projects. At Just a Drop we focus on removing barriers for women and girls via Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM), sometimes referred to as Menstrual Health & Hygiene (MHH). But what do we mean by Menstrual Hygiene Management?

  • Why Water?

    Why Water?

With clean water, communities can begin to lift themselves out of poverty and build brighter futures. Drinking dirty water can make people sick. That’s just part of the picture. A lack of clean water and sanitation holds back development and makes it harder for communities to escape the poverty trap.
