Overview
We want to take a moment to shine a light on the daily work Just a Drop carries out to promote gender equality across the globe.
A lack of safe water and sanitation disproportionately affects women and girls, who are most often the ones walking long distances to collect water for their families. When this burden is lifted, opportunities become available, and we help to unlock their full potential.
All of our programmes contribute towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5: to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Read more about our impact on the SDGs here.

Kenya
At Muuo Wa Yinthungu in Kenya, 1,040 people now have access to safe water, thanks to the installation of a sand dam.
The programme at Muuo Wa Yinthungu also includes agricultural support. The community has helped to terrace the land and plant seeds that will eventually grow into trees. Many participants are women who, freed from the daily long walks to fetch water, can now help their communities by creating tree nurseries to support water and soil conservation.

Impact Story
We recently spoke to Maria Esther, a woman in Nicaragua whose life has been changed by access to safe water.
Maria’s community of 225 people gained access to safe water and the effect on women and girls was transformative:
The big change is that women like me no longer have to carry water on our heads. We no longer hurt our backs and heads. Also, diarrheal sicknesses have decreased.

Uganda
Women and girls across Uganda are benefiting from our work to provide safe water and sanitation, helping to advance gender equality.
As part of our programmes, we deliver menstrual health education in every school we work with, encouraging positive changes in attitudes both in the classroom and at home. The images below show pad-making workshops at Akum Primary School, where students are learning to make reusable period pads – ensuring that no one has to go without access to essential period products.

Interview Series with Fiona Jeffery OBE
As part of our gender equality spotlight, we spoke with our Founder and President, Fiona Jeffery OBE, about what gender equality means to her and why it is at the heart of our work.
Fiona shared her thoughts on the disproportionate impact that a lack of safe water and sanitation has on women, and why providing these essential services can be truly transformative.

What Gender Equality Means to Us
To highlight our commitment to gender equality, last month we released a film and an infographic illustrating the need for gender-focused water, sanitation, and hygiene provision – and showing how Just a Drop is addressing it.
When we say we are committed to gender equality, we don’t mean only in certain areas of our work – we mean it across our entire range of programmes.
