The Partnership
The Torridon is nestled in an otherworldly landscape where rugged mountains meet the gleaming sea loch and endless skies.
It’s a Scottish resort that captures the splendour and charm of the surrounding Highlands.
The Torridon is Just a Drop’s first ever Tap Water for All Partner – successfully running the for four years.
Allan Paterson, the Commercial Manager at the Torridon Hotel told us how the programme works;
“Our refillable glass bottles (with donations attached) have significantly reduced our single-use plastic. And supporting Just a Drop fulfils the societal aspect of ESG by funding meaningful projects worldwide—something our guests deeply value.
It’s a straightforward, meaningful way to communicate a positive message to your guests and it’s incredibly easy to deliver operationally.”
This year the hotel are supporting the 367 children and 18 teachers at Utangwa Girls Secondary School in the arid Makueni County in Kenya, to access safe water and sanitation.
The school currently uses plastic water tanks to collect water but there is not enough volume in the tanks to collect enough water to meet the needs of the school.
This means that students are required to walk to collect water from a river many miles away in the morning before school starts. The water from the river is dirty and makes the children ill – cases of stomach problems and other water related complications are often reported meaning that children miss school and their families spend all of the little income they have on doctor’s bills. The lack of sanitation facilities further exacerbates the situation, making it hard to control the spread of diseases.
Thanks to the Torridon, Just a Drop can change this situation for the girls at the school. We are now working with the school to construct a rainwater harvesting tank which will provide safe water for the whole school all year round. During the rainy season the tank harvests rain collected from the roof of the school, enabling the children and teachers to access to year-round water. The tank will be decorated with positive hygiene messages to reinforce good handwashing practices.
We’ll complement this work by constructing handwashing stations across the school grounds and by working with the school to form a Health Club. Led by a teacher, the members of the Health Club become ambassadors of handwashing, encouraging their peers to wash their hands after using the bathroom and before eating, whilst also leading peer-to-peer learning sessions.
This is just one of hundreds of projects that we’ve been able to support thanks to the Torridon and their Tap Water for All Programme.
