Water for All Back to School Campaign Donate September marks a special month in many parents’ calendar – the return to school for the start of a new academic year! We have survived the summer holidays, our children are another year older and so we send them off in their shiny new uniform to begin a new school term. September is also the time of year when the Water for All committee is presented with the opportunity to select the projects we will support with the money raised through salary sacrifice and fundraising. In our recent meeting with our partners Just a Drop we heard about three schools (in Kenya, Nicaragua and India) where children do not have access to proper sanitation facilities or clean water for drinking or handwashing. This results in children missing a lot of school due to widespread disease and illnesses, and teenage girls are especially impacted by the lack of proper sanitation in these schools. In fact, it is estimated that 443 million school days are lost each year due to water-related illness. We would love to raise funds to support one of these projects and so are appealing to employees in all Atlas Copco companies in the UK & Ireland to support our back to school campaign in September. Thanks to your donations from our last campaign we were able to support 258 students and 11 teachers at Ndumbi School! Before now the school would buy water for the students to use at school, but there wasn't enough to go around and it was also costing the school a lot of money which could have been used to support the students. Girls would often drop out of school early because they couldn't wash and keep themselves clean on their periods. We used your donations to: Construct one 104m3 water storage tank in the school Install a guttering system to drain rain water from classroom roofs during the rainy season Paint of the tank walls and inscribing hygiene promotion messages especially on hand washing Conduct WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) training with the students and teachers Run soap making training with the students Thanks to your support, the students at Ndumbi School can access safe, clean water all year round.
