Overview

As we head into the summer, we wanted to show our supporters what the first half of 2025 has looked like for Just a Drop…

Well, we’ve had completed projects, newly started projects, a new website, award wins, and plenty more, all of which you’ll find more information about below.

Kenya

We have now completed four sand dams in Kenya which will directly benefit 3,467 people.

The four communities are located in Kenya’s Kitui county and all will now have enough safe water for drinking, washing, food preparation, and crop planting.

Pictured below are members of the community from Tulanduli Kisandoo Self Help Group, celebrating the completion of the sand dam.

Impact Story

For our impact story, we stay in Kenya, at Mathangathi community. The team were recently able to speak to a community member about how the newly built sand dam has improved her life.

She explained that with more water available, she can now grow kale, peppers, and bananas, all of which she sells to community members, along with seeds from her new tree nursery:

We used to fetch water from the earth dam, which was far away and couldn’t be used for farming. Now, with the sand dam and shallow well, we have water nearby, making farming possible. I plan to plant more vegetables to sell and provide school fees for my children.

Cambodia

We were pleased to complete our work at Kouk Kok village to improve access to safe water and sanitation for 390 children and adults.

The project involved the construction and installation of 70 biosand filters to provide safe water in people’s homes, as well as 20 latrines to eliminate open defecation.

The team carried out comprehensive hygiene training with the community and will now monitor the project to ensure all outcomes are achieved.

Zambia

We were delighted that our long-term partners BAC were able to join us on a project visit to Zambia.

The team saw the impact that borehole rehabilitations were having on communities in Zambia’s Mumbwa District, as well as the effect of new latrines in schools in Kalomo District.

The trip was a great success and we’d like to once again thank BAC for their support which made these projects possible.

Nicaragua

We are pleased to start work on a project supporting 136 people in Caña de Castilla, Nicaragua with a piped water system, which will provide 33 households with safe water directly to their homes.

On top of this, we’ll also be supporting watershed restoration. In the local area, 2,500 trees will be planted to enhance rainwater infiltration, keeping local streams flowing and ensuring water availability. This will also help preserve soil quality, prevent soil erosion, and provide a source of food.

Work is now underway at Akum Primary School.

The programme will reach 1,310 students and community members through the installation of a borehole, two rainwater harvesting tanks, as well as two new latrine blocks and five handwashing stations.

Once completed, the project will ensure a sustainable source of safe water, as well as hygiene and sanitation resources, for everybody at the school and in the local community.

India

In April, we began a project in Daha village which will provide 323 people with safe water, through the installation of a borehole which will provide piped water directly to people’s homes, as well as to the local school.

The community are currently reliant on a seasonal dam that dries up in February, at which point the community is forced to walk up to 3 kilometres in each direction to fetch water. This task usually falls to women and girls, adversely affecting their schooling and ability to work.

On top of the safe water aspect, we’ll also provide comprehensive hygiene and sanitation training to make sure that the community in Daha are better off for generations to come.

Awards

In May, we were very happy to win a Business Charity Award for our prosperous partnership with PPHE Hotel Group. We won the award in the ‘Sport, Travel, & Leisure’ category and the recognition is testament to the amazing work that PPHE do to support Just a Drop, raising money through their ‘Green Housekeeping’ initiative.

At the same awards, we were also shortlisted with the Smiths Group Foundation for the Corporate Foundation of the Year Award.

We were further presented with a Highly Commended award at the National Fundraising Awards, once again for our partnership with PPHE, this time for ‘Charity-Business Partnership of the Year’.
