It's Global Handwashing Day: Let's All Put Our Hands Together

As a beauty brand focusing on the personal care sector, it has been so inspirational to work with Just a Drop, partnering this year and last to help bring clean water, sanitation, soap making and hygiene training to the Kyunyu Primary School in Makueni County, Kenya.  Global Hand Washing Day throws in to the spotlight the tragic statistics that 20.3 million people (41%) in Kenya are unable to access safe water and 34.8 million people (70%) have no access to adequate sanitation.  Everyone should have the right to access soap and clean water, so when Just a Drop approached us we were keen to help in any way we could.

So who are we?!  Baylis & Harding was founded in 1970, to this very day a family owned and run business.  Our principles stem from our beloved late grannies, Granny Baylis and Granny Harding.  Their kindness and generosity to others is very much the philosophy behind our business, whether it is filling our products liberally with the finest fragrances or packing them to the brim with beautiful ingredients.  We are also very proud to be the No 1 UK gift brand and our hand washes and products are now found in one in two UK households.

Global Hand Washing Day is a fantastic vehicle to help raise awareness of the importance of washing hands, so it’s been amazing to work with Just a Drop to help do just that in Makueni County.  By funding the project for the installation of a rainwater harvesting tank and three handwashing stations at the Kyunyu Primary School in Makueni County, this has helped provide year-round safe water for drinking, cooking and cleaning, giving easy access to hand washing.

The water tank project is now completed - it has been so rewarding to help support the training of local people on good hygiene practices, how to make soap and most importantly to ensure there is always a ready supply of soap at the school and at pupils’ homes.  Hopefully this means the school will be far better prepared to prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as Covid-19.

To celebrate this project, Baylis & Harding launched and undertook their own company team initiative - the Walk for Water’ Challenge.  Taking place over three months, staff walked (as one team) a total of 826 miles – the distance of a return trip from Kenya to Tanzania. Individual steps were tracked and logged via an app with the aim to get outside, get moving and challenge ourselves to see how far we can walk!

During such uncertain times, Global Hand Washing Day has never been more important to help raise awareness of the importance of hand washing and hand hygiene. Access to a regular supply of water should be a necessity, not a luxury, and we hope our collaboration with Just a Drop has gone one step closer to making this a reality for everyone.
