The women making a difference in Nicaragua

The roles played by women in society are increasingly visible. Pay parity, the ‘Me Too’ movement and recent high-profile sporting events including the Women's World Cup, and Netball World Cup, are all helping to champion women’s causes and raise awareness of key issues faced by women in society. In some parts of the world, where basic needs are often still being met, women are making themselves heard in different ways.

    Solving India's Sanitation Conundrum

India is aiming to become an open defecation free country by October 2019. Although the Indian Government is building toilets on a massive scale, the numbers don’t match the reality – toilets simply remain unused. Properly designed and constructed toilets with washrooms for women, together with the essential component of education around sanitation and hygiene practices, are key to making India an open defecation free country, says Jim Baldwin, Just a Drop’s Project Engineer for India

    Timothy's Story

Timothy, 39, is from Makueni County, Kenya. Just a Drop worked with Timothy's community to provide access to safe water through the construction of a sand dam. Sand dams raise the water table of the surrounding area, regenerating the land and enabling vegetation to grow. We caught up with Timothy to hear how the sand dam has supported the development of his successful farming and fruit growing business.

  • What We Do

We work at a grassroots level to support communities around the world with access to sustainable safe water solution, sanitation facilities and knowledge of safe hygiene practices: such as through the construction of wells, pipelines, sand dams, rainwater harvesting systems and latrines, and hygiene and sanitation programmes.

  • Projects

Map showing our clean water, sanitation and hygiene projects across the world.

  • Why Water?

With clean water, communities can begin to lift themselves out of poverty and build brighter futures. Drinking dirty water can make people sick. That’s just part of the picture. A lack of clean water and sanitation holds back development and makes it harder for communities to escape the poverty trap.

  • Our Approach

We believe everyone, everywhere, should have access to clean water as a basic right. We want to see a world where everyone has clean water and adequate sanitation, and the increased health and prosperity this brings. Our approach is to support marginalised people across the world through community-led development, rather than aid; and to focus on sustainability and quality, ensuring a project's transformative impact is felt for decades to come.
