Jim spent his youth swimming, building rafts and narrowly escaping drowning on several occasions. He joined the army in 1943 at the tender age of 14 and scaled up the ranks to become Captain. He served for 32 years as a Sapper, which is where he learnt about all matters relating to water. At one stage he served with John Blashford-Snell and with his combat engineer experience, found himself stretched to the limit in keeping him from blowing himself up with his homemade explosive devices. Together they founded the Scientific Exploration Society and embarked on several escapades along the Blue Nile. Returning from a stint in the Congo, Jim became involved in running various youth ventures, including Operation Drake, Raleigh and the Fairbridge, earning him an MBE for his ‘services to youth’.
