Tanzania Muhvi School

Name of project: Mhuvi School

Location: Ughandi B village, Singida District, Tanzania, Africa. GPS -

Project supporter: Doras Trust

Challenge:  The village had one shallow well which was in poor condition and yielded little water. Poor sanitation at the school led to high absenteeism, particularly among senior girls who would miss up to seven days a month due to the combination of their menstrual cycle and the lack of proper facilities.

What we did: We built a 20 pit latrine for the school, with facilities for any disabled students and doors to each cubicle, and included a washroom for the girls. ** ANA – it mentions two boreholes. Did JAD do this or was that someone else? **

Achievements: The new facilities have cut down on absenteeism at the school. We trained local artisans in building skills to help them maintain the facilities and also put their new expertise to good use for the community.

Beneficiaries: 3,000 villagers and 680 schoolchildren

Start Date: April 2009

Finish date: August 2009
