DUTCH DIAMOND GETS WATER FLOWING IN ZAMBIA
Auctioning of an exclusive Gassan 121 diamond worth £10,000 as well as several city breaks and a painting raised an amazing £3,680 for the Just a Drop Foundation at the 2007 WTM. This fundraising effort by the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions has resulted in the realisation of a project to provide clean water for Siazibola Village in the Mukuni Chiefdom which is in the Kazungula District of the Southern Province of Zambia. The support for this project will be announced at the World Travel Market on Tuesday 11 November at 17.00.
The people of Siazibola Village draw their domestic water from the nearby crocodile infested Chise stream which is over a kilometre away. The low rainfall coupled with very hot temperatures have also attributed to the streams drying up. This project will:
· Ensure that clean and safe drinking water is provided in Siazibola Community.
• Safe guard the Siazibola Community from the dangers of being attacked by crocodiles while drawing water.
• Reduce incidences of water borne diseases.
• Reduce incidences of encounters with elephants while drawing water.
Fiona Jeffery, founder and chairman of Just a Drop says “We cannot thank the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions enough for their brilliant work in supporting Just a Drop over the past five years. Being able to realise this project on the back of the fund-raising efforts of the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions shows their commitment to the Just a Drop Foundation and helping deprived communities around the world getting a basic need in life.”
Director of the UK & Ireland, Andrew van der Feltz comments: “It is inspirational to see what difference can be achieved for the communities with modest amounts of money raised during WTM and we will continue to lend our support to this most worthy cause.”
This year at WTM 2008 the NBTC together with Den Haag Marketing will support Just a Drop by auctioning an electric environmentally friendly Orange car worth a staggering £12,294. Bidding closes on Wednesday 12 November at 5.00pm. The highest validated bid will win the car. With the money raised the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions hopes to make a big difference to another underprivileged community in the world.
