Please don’t forget Haiti!
Last January a devastating earthquake ripped Haiti apart and killed more than 230,000 people. The lack of current media coverage would suggest this natural disaster has long been forgotten, but here at Just a Drop, our support work is just beginning… Nine months after the initial disaster, we sent one of our trained engineers to assess the situation. Tim Kingham, a chartered engineer with more than 40 years of professional experience, was shocked by the devastation he witnessed. Communities were ravaged by Cholera and many schools were unable to operate. We have now set aside more than £165,000 of funding, which has been donated to us from various companies including All Leisure Group, Cooperative Travel,. Kuoni, Reed Exhibitions, Shearing Group, Thomas Cook and TUI UK In a bid to help, Just a Drop has partnered with Outreach International, which manages the development of more than 90 schools in the region. Meanwhile, we have called on second partner, construction and engineering company, Article 25 to work alongside Just a Drop as part of a programme to rehabilitate 30 schools badly damaged by the quake. The programme will commence this February with 2 schools by providing the Croix des Missions and Cote Plage schools with access to clean, safe drinking water and toilets to maintain sanitation. With the help of our partners and generous supporters we are currently investigating the implementation of rain water collection tanks and solar powered pumps to provide these children with fresh water. Our mission is to ensure they can attend school in a safe, clean environment and get the education they deserve. “Now that the immediate relief operation is over it is vital that support is ongoing so that the recovery process is sustained” said Fiona Jeffery, chairman of Just a Drop. “That way people can start taking charge of their own lives again through agriculture, employment and education. In doing so, their overall pride and sense of wellbeing will be gradually restored”.
Help us to help them by making a donation here today. 100% of funds raised for Haiti will go to Haiti and help us rebuild the country's water and sanitation infrastructure at a local community level.
