DAKAR 2011 BID TO BENEFIT JUST A DROP
Interest is mounting in the bid by two British rally drivers to compete and win Dakar 2011, the toughest and most iconic race on the planet AND at the same time, raise desperately needed funds for the international water-aid charity, Just a Drop.
Mark Jennings-Bates, one of Canada’s leading motor rally driver and the UK’s veteran Dakar motor cycle rider, Mick Extance, are joining forces to pull off what is possibly the most audacious - and ambitious - dual feat ever in the name of charity.
The legendary race covers some of the world’s toughest terrain in Argentina and Chile.
The pair will be showing off what they can do with their off-road Nemesis EXR at Goodwood’s Festival of Speed, UK in July before getting down to final preparations for the race of their lives.
But Extance, Britain’s most successful Dakar rider, with five finishing medals to his name, will be on four wheels this time – not two.
They aim to raise a significant amount for Just a Drop and help save the lives of thousands of children in third world countries without access to clean water.
A television series ‘Race4Life’ is planned, produced by Antares Media, the international multi platform drama and entertainment specialists.
Originally, Extance and Jennings-Bates were taking just one off-road Nemesis Bowler to the Dakar. But as interest in the TV programme escalates, they are considering introducing a second Bowler EXR to the Dakar … with a twist.
Said Jennings-Bates: “There has been so much attention given to the philanthropic work that we have decided it was worth exploring the ability of putting a well known personality into the seat of a Bowler EXR, giving the fans a chance to engage more closely with our activities.”
“Mark and Mick’s daring efforts to defy the triple challenges of human endurance, the elements and some of the most difficult landscape in South America for the sake of Just a Drop is quite brilliant”, said Fiona Jeffery, chairman and founder of Just a Drop.
“In the Mark and Mick’s view, their amazing challenge is nothing like the struggle experienced every day by women and children just trying to survive with limited or no access to clean water.”
The Dakar, broadcast in 190 countries, takes place between1-16 January 2011.
