Camel drinking waterHere are some astonishing facts about water!

  • One in ten of the world’s total population does not have access to clean, safe water
  • More people in the world own mobile phones than have access to a toilet
  • At any given time, half the world’s hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from water related diseases
  • The ancient Romans had better water quality than half the people in the world today

And here are some very disturbing facts about water…

  • Over 2.75 million people die from diseases every year because of unsafe water
  • Over half of these deaths are among children and millions more suffer from illnesses
  • Children in poor environments often carry 1,000 parasitic worms in their bodies at any one time
  • Almost 4,000 children die every day because of unsafe water

Boy with Just a Drop banner…But, here’s a positive way to look at these facts:

  • You don’t need to raise much to make a difference
  • £1 provides clean, safe water to a child for approximately 10 years
  • £10 is more than enough to provide a child with clean, safe water for the rest of their life
  • £24 is enough to provide a family of four with clean water for life!

Just a Drop Fact File

Girl drinking water
It’s hard to believe that every 20 seconds, a child dies from water borne diseases.

Just a Drop was set up in 1998 and aims to reduce the number of children who die from diseases  such as dysentery, diarrhoea and cholera, which are caused by unsafe water. We build wells and hand pumps, improve sanitation and carry out health and hygiene education programmes.

So far, we have helped an estimated 1.5 million people in over 30 countries.
