Fixing new pumpFinished pumpschool children with new pump

The Acholi people of northen Uganda have suffered the consequences of rebel insugency for the past 20 years. The Lord's Resistance Army ( LRA) have terrorised the people of the north through murder, rape and mutilation. More than 20,000 children have been kidnapped and forced to join the rebels

African Revival works with schools in Gulu District as part of our schools linking programme. We aim to improveaccess to and quality of primary education for children living in ths war-affected region. Schools in Gulu District, though understaffed and under-resourced, continue to function in the most extreme circumstances.Children in northern Uganda understand the importance of education and are desperate to learn; however, with class sizes often exceeding 150 pupils and lack of basic resources such as desks, books and PE equipment, the challenges are great.

In addition to the lack of educational resources, many schools operating in Gulu District do not have easy access to clean drinking water. The lack of clean water results in food or water-borne infectious diseases, such as diarrhoea, hepatitis A and typhoid fever.

Holy Rosary Primary School had expressed a need for an existing borehole in the school grounds to become motorised and for a pipeline to be installed. This has allowed the school to fill a ten thousand litre water tank to supply water to the school for drinking and sanitation. The large population of the school (2,880 pupils and 21 teachers) have had a negative impact on sanitation but now with an adequate water supply the school is able to drain waste from the pit latrines to the sewerage site. This will greatly reduce the risk of the water-borne diseases.
